There are actually different species of termites that can destroy your home in different ways!! EEK and of course, the best way to prevent and control would be to identify the different types of termites. Here are the most common types of termites you might find.
Drywood Termites: These termites are best known as “furniture termites” because just like their name, they dwell in dry wood and live above ground. This can be wooden furniture indoor or the hardwood floor or the even the walls of your house.
Subterranean Termites: These will be the most prevalent in North America and are also known as soil-feeding termites, which means they nest underground. They love the cellulose part of wood and can feed on other things besides wood like cotton, paper, and roots.
Formosan Subterranean Termites: This species of termites eat wood at an alarming rate and can take down a whole house in just a few years. They also reproduce quickly and a colony can have about 1300 new termite eggs in just one day. I’m not sure if its true or not, but there are people that say they eat even plastic and metal.
Dampwood Termites: These termites are different from the above termites in that they feed on damp wood. This includes rotting wood, or and timber or wood that is moist. They may be the least common of these listed termite species.
